A running staple since it hit the shelves in 1987, the Tinker Hatfield-designed Nike Air Max changed the game with the premiere of a visible Max Air unit. Now the coveted cushioning wasn't a mystery – you could look and actually see the cloud-like air pocket. Model after model of Air Max sneakers have been released in the years since, including such iconic models as the Air Max 1, Air Max 90, and Air Max 95. Air Max Day

On March 26, 1987 Nike released the Air Max 1 featuring the first-ever visible Air unit. The bold and until-then unprecedented idea to expose the inner workings of the shoe to the world was inspired by the Centre Pompidou, a gallery in Paris whose framework, stairwells and walkways are all visible from the outside. The designer behind the Air Max 1, a former architect and University of Oregon track alum named Tinker Hatfield, brought the concept to Nike and much of the feedback that he received was that the idea was too outrageous to work.

More than 30 years later, it’s clear that the world has embraced Visible Air technology as the Air Max line has continued to evolve and captivate the sneaker community. Every year since 2014, Nike has celebrated the 1987 anniversary of the release of the OG Air Max silhouette with Air Max Day on March 26 by releasing new Air Max models or limited-edition silhouettes to a receptive community of kicks enthusiasts.
